What Exactly Does an Osteopath Do?
If your back is behaving like it’s 90 years old, your neck has decided turning left is overrated, or your shoulder has started making noises that definitely weren’t there last week — you might be wondering what an osteopath can actually do about it.
If you've never visited an osteopath before, it's perfectly reasonable to wonder what actually happens and how osteopathic treatment might be able to help.
What does an osteopath actually look at?
Osteopaths are trained to assess and treat problems involving the muscles, joints and other tissues of the body.
We look at how you move, where it hurts, what makes it worse, what makes it better, and what might be contributing to the problem.
So, yes, we may work on your back. But we don't just focus on the bit that's shouting the loudest.
Your hip, ankle, posture, work setup, training routine, sleep, previous injuries and even the way you spend your day can all provide useful clues.
What might osteopathic treatment involve?
There isn't one treatment that every patient receives. What we do depends on your symptoms, assessment, individual circumstances and what you're hoping to get back to doing.
Your treatment may include:
We may also prescribe exercises, offer practical advice and help you gradually get back to the activities you enjoy.
And no, we don't spend the entire appointment trying to make your spine sound like a packet of Rice Krispies.
Is osteopathic treatment always hands-on?
No. Sometimes treatment is gentle. Sometimes it's more hands-on.
And sometimes the most useful thing we can do is tell you that you don't need treatment at all.
That may mean explaining what you can safely do yourself or, when appropriate, referring you to another healthcare professional.
A good assessment is about understanding what's going on and deciding on an appropriate way forward — rather than assuming every patient needs the same treatment.
It's not about finding a “perfect posture”
Most importantly, osteopathy isn't about finding a mythical "perfect posture" or convincing you that every ache means something is broken.
It's about understanding your symptoms, improving movement, building confidence and helping you get back to doing what matters to you.
We're movement detectives.
We investigate the clues, make a plan and help you get your body back on speaking terms with you.
