Two Weeks To Go
I have done some physical challenges over the years, the trail walker challenge 100 k walk over the beautiful south downs in under 30 hours for Oxfam and the Gurkhas, a tough mudder, an Olympic triathalon (with a torn knee cartilage) the Yorkshire three peaks twice (26 mile walk up three peaks in under 12 hours) and lots of park runs. In two weeks time I take on the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Taylor Made Dreams which is a great charity which supports children that have terminal illness and their families both during and just as importantly after their illness.
I never met Jared as he died before we got to know his family through his sister Sasha but his legacy lives on as we are doing this to help a charity which has certainly helped their family. If you would like to donate here is the just giving link.
The human body and just as importantly our mind is an incredible thing. I say the two because if we do the training it is impressive how our body becomes stronger and fitter. To do the training it is motivation and inspiration that pushes you when it feels hard, when you are tired, or it is raining and cold outside but strangely even when it is hard you always feel better after; those wonderful natural chemical highs given to us by endorphins that are released in our brain.
All of us can get fitter, the couch to 5 k is a wonderful starting point. Even if your mobility or fitness is severely limited you can still improve your fitness. Another way to go about it is through your phone work out your average step count over 3 to 5 days. Take 10% of that and try to do that extra for three days then carry on increasing every 3-4 days another 10% of the new figure.
It is quantity of scales so if you are naturally fitter and more active you can increase the intensity quicker. A way to work out whether the intensity of your exercise is right for you, how quickly does your heart rate get up to your upper limit? To work this out take 220 and minus your age and divide this by 100 and multiply by 80. If you are doing gentle exercise and it reaches this quickly your fitness may be low so the intensity of exercise needs to be low to begin with and as you get fitter this can be raised. If you are not near this figure the intensity of the exercise can be raised accordingly. If you would like support and help have a chat with one of our Osteopaths or there are many personal trainers and gyms which offer support with a trained professional.
So, when it feels hard and my body is moaning at me, I remember life is precious and I am grateful for our friendship with Sasha’s family and Jared as he provided the inspiration to get out there and run. I am grateful for running as I receive the gift of my body feeling fitter and although my muscles moan at me, I am rewarded by those lovely brain highs!
