Standing On One Leg

Can you stand on one leg and move the leg around without losing your balance? Can you sit on the floor and get up without using your hands to assist you in getting up? Can you squat, keeping your feet flat on the ground?

These are seemingly simple things, and if you have good joint mobility and strength, and coordination, you will be able to do those things well.

The shocking thing is that most of us cannot do those things, and the biggest culprit – CHAIRS. We have evolved into hunters and gatherers, so rest means sitting on the floor. We will need to get up from time to time, so our ability to get up from the ground unaided is significant. Sitting uses our leg and pelvic muscles in ways that help our low back mobility.

What can I do about it, Chris? It’s pretty simple – sit on the floor more in the evenings and practice standing on one leg (with appropriate ways of stabilising yourself if needed). Get off the chairs and on the floor!
